Tooth Extractions in Gasport, NY

At Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky , we believe that your natural teeth should remain in your mouth where they belong! We will do everything we can to help you keep your natural teeth; however, certain circumstances may arise in which you need a tooth removed:
Periodontal Disease — Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss. This chronic infection causes damage to the tissue and bone that support your tooth. Dr. Igor Kaplansky offers effective treatment options for gum disease and will work with you to remedy the illness before it leads to tooth loss. If, however, the condition has been allowed to advance to an extreme state, the tooth may need to be removed.
Severe Decay — You may need a tooth removed if it has experienced advanced decay that is beyond the point of being repaired with a root canal or other treatment. Removing your tooth is important in this circumstance because decay can lead to an infection, or abscess, at the tooth’s root. Without extraction, the infection could fester and spread.
Crowding — You may need a tooth pulled if you have an overly crowded mouth. Removing one or more teeth could help prepare your mouth for orthodontic treatment.
Trauma — If you’ve had a bad injury to your tooth, it may need to be extracted. Removal of the tooth is sometimes necessary if the tooth has broken.
Wisdom Tooth Removal at Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky
Dr. Kaplansky also performs wisdom tooth extractions. Your wisdom teeth are the four permanent adult teeth at the very back of your mouth – two on the top and two on the bottom. These teeth may need to be removed if there is not enough room in your mouth for them to grow in comfortably. In some cases, Dr. Kaplansky will recommend having them removed in order to avoid future problems.

How Is a Tooth Removed?

Before our dentist in Lockport, NY performs an extraction, Dr. Kaplansky will administer a numbing agent so that you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. He will then use forceps to gently rock the tooth back and forth in your mouth until it comes loose. The wound at the extraction site will be carefully closed, and you’ll be given instructions for proper at-home care during the healing process. Dr. Kaplansky may also prescribe medication to help with any soreness experienced after the extraction.
Though it may be necessary to have a tooth removed, you don’t have to live with a gap in your smile forever. Talk to Dr. Kaplansky about our tooth replacement options to determine which solution is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you place implants immediately after extractions?
In many cases, your Gasport, NY dentists, Drs. Kaplansky and Smith, can place your dental implants immediately following tooth extractions. In fact, our dentists prefer this method over delayed placement due to shorter healing times and lower risks of bone loss. However, if you have an infection, placement may need to wait.
If Dr. Kaplansky determines that immediate placement of your dental implant will provide the best long-term result for you, he will place it immediately after your tooth extraction.
The entire process starts with a thorough exam and conversation in our dental office. Your dentist wants to see if implants will work for your smile needs and talk to you more about your smile goals.
The process itself includes surgical implantation of a tooth root replacement. Your dentist always makes sure the implant site is numb and that you are comfortable before starting the process. When this step is complete, your dentist attaches a dental crown over your replacement root to give you a new tooth.
If you do not have immediate tooth placement, your dentist may opt to provide your new crown after the root has integrated with the bone; this usually takes several months.
