Strong Candidates for Dental Implants

The ideal candidate for dental implants in Lockport has a good bone density in their jaw, has no signs of gum disease, and is in generally good dental health. If you have poor bone density, all is not lost! Dr. Kaplansky may recommend bone grafting, which he can complete right here at our Lockport dental office in a separate surgery before implant surgery.
We should also treat any gum disease to prepare you for implant surgery and ensure the success of your investment. If you currently have gum disease in its early stages, we will work with you to reverse the condition before moving forward with the implant placement process. Mild gum disease can typically be reversed through diligent brushing and flossing and by visiting our dental office regularly for thorough professional cleanings.
If your gum disease is advanced, however, you may not be a strong candidate for dental implants. Advanced stages of gum disease can lead to bone and tissue loss in the mouth. If you struggle with gum disease that is too far advanced for implants, Dr. Kaplansky will work with you to explore alternative treatment options.
For exceptional results and the best chance of implant success, we need to place dental implants in sites that are healthy and infection-free.

Personalized Dental Implant Treatment Plans

Every patient is different, which means Dr. Kaplansky takes a unique and individualized approach for every implant that he places. The general placement process, however, is the same for most patients. Read below to learn more about how we place your dental implant:

Placing the Dental Implant

During surgery, Dr. Kaplansky will place a titanium base in the bone of your jaw. This base is the actual “implant” portion of the treatment. Your natural bone will support the implant post and eventually heal around the metal in a process called osseointegration . This healing period typically takes a few months. During these few months, we leave the implant site alone to heal fully, and we do not work on the area any further.

Once the osseointegration is done and your jawbone has fully fused to the implant, Dr. Kaplansky then places a lifelike crown on top of the implant post and above the gum line. This crown, typically made of porcelain, is designed to blend in perfectly with your natural teeth. The crown is the only visible portion of the entire implant. It is attached to the implant base using an abutment (attachment) piece hidden under the crown.

Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants can help prevent further bone loss. This is why dental implants are such a fantastic treatment option–they replace missing teeth while simultaneously protecting the remaining teeth. The titanium base of the implant stimulates the bone tissue to generate healthy cells in much the same way that your natural tooth roots do. Another advantage of dental implants is that they will not slip or slide in your mouth like a denture.
