At Dentistry by Dr. Kaplansky, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dentistry. Your smile is different from everyone else’s, which means that your dental needs are too. Even if you tend to get nervous while visiting the dentist, you may find that you’re more comfortable with specific procedures and more anxious about others—and that’s ok!

We use sedation dentistry as a tool to help you tolerate dental treatment, so we will only rely on it when necessary. This means that you can choose to be sedated as often or as infrequently as you need.
You are unique, and we personalize your dental care as needed to make you feel as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Our treatment team is here to ensure you have what you need to be successful and regularly make it to your dental appointments, and we will always offer whatever advice or suggestions we can!

Reasons to Choose Sedation Dentistry

It’s normal to feel a little embarrassed about your fear of the dentist, especially if someone has previously told you that it’s an irrational or childish fear. The reality is, however, that there’s no reason to be embarrassed about your nervousness and that you are not alone— an estimated 15 percent of Americans suffer from dental anxiety. That’s 80 million people!
Everyone has different reasons for their dental anxiety. For some, it’s the smells and sounds of a dental office; for others, it’s related to a bad experience with a dentist in the past. Whatever the reason, we encourage you to share your concerns with us so we can customize your treatment and sedation to fit your needs.
We offer sedation dentistry in Lockport, NY to our patients who have a difficult time visiting the dentist or whose oral health is suffering from dental fears. If you know that dental anxiety is holding you back from excellent oral health, our sedation treatments may be right for you.
Some of the more popular reasons our patients choose sedation dentistry include:
Our dentist in Lockport recommends sedation dentistry if you are too anxious to come to the dentist for services like teeth cleanings, cavity fillings, or dental exams on your own. To learn more about our different types of dental sedation, keep reading!

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

We currently give our patients a choice between two different sedative options.
Your choices for sedation dentistry in Lockport include oral sedation and intravenous sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is precisely what its name implies: a sedative taken orally in pill form.

With oral sedation, Dr. Kaplansky will prescribe a sedative for you to take about an hour before your dental appointment. This gives the medicine time to work so that when you arrive, you will already feel its calming effects. Once you’re in the dental chair, you will feel relaxed and drowsy. Some patients even drift off during their procedure!
Oral sedation is entirely safe to use and will not have any lasting effects on your body or your smile. Because the medicine stays in your system for several hours after treatment and will make you drowsy, however, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment. Any other mild side effects, such as nausea or dry mouth, should wear off by the end of the day.

Intravenous Sedation

Some people have a hard time swallowing pills or don’t like the idea of taking prescription medication before their procedure. If you fall into this category, not to worry—we offer a second type of sedation dentistry.
If you would prefer to “go to sleep” for your dental procedure, we’re happy to accommodate your needs with intravenous (IV) sedation. Your safety is one of our highest priorities, so we are pleased to offer the services of a board-certified anesthesiologist who comes to our office to administer IV sedation.
Our intravenous sedation will leave you in a semi-conscious state, so you will still be able to communicate with Dr. Kaplansky as needed. However, you will be unaware of the activity around you and have little or no memory of what took place during your procedure.

We Can Help Guide You

If you’re feeling unsure about which safe sedation dentistry method is right for you, our Lockport dentist is happy to make a recommendation. The type of sedative you choose will depend on several factors, including cost and your comfort level with medical needles. For our patients who have a fear of the dentist and also an aversion to shots and needles, we strongly recommend choosing oral sedation!

Our dental sedation is not only for “big” treatments like root canals or cavity fillings . We can use sedation dentistry to help you feel relaxed during something as standard as a teeth cleaning or dental exam. To learn more about when dental sedation is appropriate, and how it can help you manage your dental anxiety, feel free to reach out at any time!
