What Is Sleep Apnea?

The most common form of sleep apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea . If you have this variation of the disorder, your body attempts to breathe, but something blocks your airway and you are unable to. When left untreated, sleep apnea can cause frequent pauses in your breathing throughout the night – in some cases over 30 times an hour!

Central Sleep Apnea is a less common form of the disorder in which the brain is not functioning properly. If you have this form of sleep apnea, your brain fails to send your respiratory system the signal that tells it to breathe. As a result, your body does not attempt to breathe. Central Sleep Apnea can be very complex, but many of the same treatment methods used to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea may help.

The inhibited breathing caused by sleep apnea can do more than disrupt a good night’s rest. The lack of oxygen to the brain and body could be putting you at an increased risk of life-threatening complications like a heart attack or stroke.

What Can a Dentist Do to Help?

Sleep apnea can affect anyone regardless of age or gender, but losing excess weight, quitting smoking, and switching to a different sleep position may be helpful.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the leading treatment for sleep apnea. With CPAP, you wear a mask at night that is attached to a device. The system pushes air through your breathing passages to keep them open all night. Unfortunately, many people find CPAP uncomfortable and have difficulty sleeping while wearing the mask.

If you’re looking for an alternative to CPAP, consult with Dr. Kaplansky about having a custom mouthpiece created. We can recommend an apparatus that fits in your mouth at night to improve your mouth’s position and allow air to flow freely. Personalized mouthpieces are more comfortable than CPAP, and many people tolerate them better.
